For the new year I decided not to make any real goals. This year I am trying to do the "Photo a Day" thing. I have noticed that I am favoring my new iPhone for the images. The quality is lovely and I always have my phone with me. Aside from taking a picture everyday, I recently ordered all of Jane Austin's novels and intend to read all of them (some of them are re-reads but it should be something nice to read before bed).

1. I hung out with my sister in the afternoon as she and her boss made brunch.

2. Lunch with Brent.

3. Running errands with my sister, stopping at Concetta.

4. Taking the dogs to get the nails ground down with my mom.

5. I got a doughnut from my favorite place in the morning before flying back to Portland.

6. My cat seemed so happy when I got home. I showered her with toys.

7. Made myself cabbage salad for dinner one night.

8. I forgot to take a photo durring the day so I played with the flash before going to sleep

9. Voodoo doughnuts had not line and I was near by with Weens so we had to stop.

10. I watched all of Trailer Park Boys, it was a non-stop sort of thing so I was just playing with the camera while watching.

11. I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing and microwaved my oatmeal for way too long.

12. I got the cutest new phone case from Bethany in the mail. I have not switched to it for day to day use because I am afraid of messing it up.

13. One of my teachers last semester published this book. It seemed too ridiculous not to buy.

14. I cut my own bangs, usually I do an alright job. This time I cut them too short.

15. Portland is the first place I have lived that it actually snows. I woke up and got dressed as fast as I could. It had stopped by the time I got outside but I still went for a short walk.

16. I realized how cold it is when it snows, made a pot of soup and stayed in my apartment for the last few days of break. I gazed out my window and drank lots of tea. I also watched a ton of movies and was overall just a lazy bum.

17. Today is the first day of the Spring Semester. I went to the post office to mail Bethany part of her Christmas present that I forgot to bring to California with me. while there I bought some handsom stamps.

Busy week. Drew a self portrait. I am reshooting my digital project. I also started working on my Art in Context project.

So far I am done with one image. My idea is to create flashcards with images made of text that detail murder/death articles from the news.

Today I have focused on homework. Monday seems to be coming so fast. I have been taking photographs, reading, and working on a project proposal.

For the past two weeks I have been brain stroming. My assignment is to use text as art. Sounds easy, right? There are so many different things that I could do I am almost overwhelmed by the possibilities. So far the only thing I am certain about is that I will use a Polaroid as my canvas (but not necessarily present a photograph).

On Monday while walking in downtown I saw this knitted quilt thing hanging on the side of the building that read "You are the chosen one." I automatically thought of Harry Potter as I took a snap shot of it. After a minute I started relate the knitted quilt thing to my assignment. I came to the realization that I could simply use a saying to create something.

While I am still coming up with the details (which I need to present tomorrow) I will have another week to create whatever it is I make with a Polaroid.

I have been in Portland for a month now. So far I have gone to Voodoo Doughnuts to try the Bacon Maple Bar, went on a day trip to Astoria with my parents the first week I was in town, explored the Pearl district, went on a few MAX rides and started school.

All of my classes have been great so far, I am even enjoying my drawing class.

This blog is going to start actually being active (which is a little shocking) I will try to post about my schooling, current projects I am working on, even maybe some outfit posts.

So, why does this post exist? I guess as an inspirational tool to get me active with my updates.

Work has been slow this week so I started to work on my new card.
I have never used the same card twice in my time at the Camera Center. They are all just runs of 100 and last about four months

I love the way my skin feels after swimming.
I love letting my hair dry naturally, watching it slowly drip and form gentle waves on the ends.
I love to lay on the warm cement reading and drying off while the sun is quietly setting in the background.

I think that something magical happens after 7 p.m. when you swim and let yourself loose track of time.

Today was the slowest day ever at work. I ended up playing around with a Nikon D60 and goofing off with some of the in camera editing.

I also found a picture of a rubber band slightly shaped like a dick and balls.

I haven't been creating much lately. I have had a giant break all summer. Today for the first time in a while I had the urge to just be in the photo lab. I ditched my morning class and went to the lab, I didn't really care if I did anything but it was just nice to sit. Leaving for work was actually hard. I just wanted to stay. I eventually left work 4 hour early and developed some film/made a contact sheet/did one print. I love running black and white film threw my XA, it is magical.

The Big Sur trip is coming up, I am hoping that I will take pictures and not think too much. I am hoping to be back to how I used to be. I plan on bringing a ton of film, my XA, Diana, and EE100 Special. This blog may be updated more if I took pictures.

Lately, I feel no inclination to pick up my camera.
Every time I take a picture I think it is boring or dumb.
I need to remind myself that it isn't boring and dumb, it is what I choose to see and keep.

I shot a little today.
Just some stuff around the house and from a car.
Tomorrow I think I am going to drive/walk around and shoot.
There are a few things I saw the other day that I liked but didn't stop.

I had a new experience today. Someone actually responded to something from the Pirates' Log's website. This is a rare occasion...Usually we get someone discussing their beliefs in regards to an opinion piece by the one and only Don Bunce or someone sharing their memories of a professor. Today it was a little different. After the online edition was up for two days we received a reply to a news article that was written. Now, why is this strange? I was given a link to a blog. [Please note, I have nothing against blogs, I am writing on one]

I went. I read. Now, this is something that I would like to say.The Pirates' Log is always on the prowl for letters to the editor.
Rather than writing a letter to me, I was given a comment, but not even that, a link to a blog. This is important. I can't publish it in the Pirates' Log. I find this an interesting approach epically when you are sending this to a newspaper.
And if you are attempting to get your voice heard and your beliefs out then write a 250 word letter and send it to me. I give my e-mail address and there is a handy link on our website that you can easily send something to. Now, why does this bother me? Well, the reply to the article is almost attacking a reporter, saying that they were one sided. We try not to do this, especially when an article is considered new and is on the front page.So why do I want to rant? Well, I guess it is my way of replying. I am going to reply on my blog, I doubt the level of readership, but this is what the internet is for sometimes.

I watched the eclipse tonight.
I stood in the middle of my front yard attempting to take the perfect picture. This sounds easy, but I was also attempting to not have any hand in it. I allowed cars to illuminate the trees and add to the image. I have no idea what they look like, though I am sure one of the 30 turned out the way I wanted.

That is what I like about film. You don't get something imidiate, unless you are using Polaroids. It is about having a faith in the images you took and knowing that you can make them look good and they way you want them to while printing.

After taking the picture is when the fun starts. The hard work, the technique and what makes someone who they are as a photographer can been seen by how they behave when there is no light.

Next week is going to be a print fest. I have eight rolls of film to develop and contact and, more than likely, a book to make. I am going to start looking through my old stuff to see if there is anything I like. I want to make my book well, and as a square. I think my pages are going to be 10x10. I want there to be lots of white. I have no clue how I plan on binding it. I am not too sure if I want to create another acordian book...but I think I can get all of my printing done in a week if I work hard.

I spent the weekend away.
I almost needed it.
I always forget how much I like Modesto until leave for a few days.
Most people would say I am crazy. Who doesn't fall in love with San Fransisco? I have never left my heart there. I leave my curiosity, but after four days I am ready to return to what I know.
A world where there is no good public transportation. parks that are not the "cool" hang out spots, and the subtle silence that hits the town every night.Here there are no buses that seem they are going to run you over even when you have the right of way, no girls yelling at each other until someone shouts "shut the fuck up," and the lack of tourists are almost amazing.
I missed the fact that you can spend a three dollars and be full for the day, the fact that the streets are bare after 6 p.m. and the fact that everything closes early, and the fact that my neighborhood has a newsletter every month.
There is something amazing about a town with a lack of a certain charm, but the people always seem to be able to bring it back.
Let the people bring something new and amazing.
Let's start our own Hamburger Eyes.
Let's get out work seen and not be afraid to talk to the people that own the galleries.
Let's be heard.
Let's make Modesto our favorite urban environment.
It certainly is a lot easier to not have to drive or take the train...

The perfect day is hard to explain.
Lou Reed says one thing, but I disagree.
It is spontaneous, involves cameras, and can even just be as simple as finding a copy of Atlas Shrugged for a dime.
The people you are with are important.
Sometimes you just need to be alone.
The gentle sound of a typewriter, running out of sticky dots, and eating a sandwich.
You can get lost in archiving and start attempting to make a clay toilette and a bathroom stall out of foam core.
Are you sick of pictures of bathrooms yet?
